The Eye of the Painter: Chapter 3_Unity

And here's some more notes from Mr. Loomis's . Its taken us a couple months but we finally hit chapter 3 haha.

Chapter 3_ Unity

Unity must begin with the design and pattern to bring about a relationship and balanced of the areas of the picture. Such balance is affected both by distribution of values_the lights, middle tones, and darks- and by the placement and amount of area of each in relationship to the whole design.

Of first importance is the necessity of training the eye to see masses flately and more or less un-broken.

The foreground carries most of the detail and accentuation, and as materials recede it becomes fuzzier and hazier.

Still life is the best study of light and pattern.

Any design is more effective when half- tones within the design are minimized and the larger and flatter areas of tones take their place among the simple tones. For power and simplification the large flat tones are best. The more contrast, the more intense and dramatic effect. The closer in values the masses are painted, the more reserved and quite unity forceful unity.

When colors are close in value, a wide range of colors may be used with beautiful effect. But huge patches of contrasting color may easily become garish and over powering. One way of achieving unity with colors is to mix a little of one color through out all the colors of the subject.

Low values will not be missed as much as bright ones.
Look to nature consistency.

If a picture has an idea, let the whole pitcure be consistent with that idea.

Abstract forms belong with other abstract forms. Realistic forms should be with realistic forms.

Flatness of treatment is one approach and round or modeled another and two do not seem to belong together.

A picture should suggest that the painting was stopped while the painter was still having a good time.

In order to have form that we can leave unfinished, we must approach the form simple at first in simple planes, and work all over the subject, bringing it to completion simultaneously rather than piece by piece.

We must think of the whole picture all the time, and of every part as it fits into the whole design.

Chapter 2_What Shall I Paint

Daily Habits to Inspire:

Acquaint himself with nature.

Sketch

Do things he wants to do rather then only those he gets paid for.
Always have a camera and sketchbook with you.
Try to color sketch outdoors.
Jot down descriptions of comps, color and ect.

Exercises

Whole sketching use 3 to 4 values.
Portrait studies are great way to increase you skill.
Still life painting is a great restorer of confidence.

There is one thing we must not do and that is letting time go by without doing anything.

Discover different abstract patterns.

Find things that interest you.

Art can never be put into a single category.

Anyone who believes that the utmost has been reached in art is evidence the first signs of stagnation.

The artist must manage to surround himself with the kind of beauty that inspires him most.

The Eye of the Painter: Prologue

While engulfed in the concrete jungles of Los Angeles last year, I sought out solitude in Del Rey. I found a quite cafe on the beach and threw my mind into my portfolio. It was there where I discovered Andrew Loomis's book "The Eye of The Painter". I found his words so true and full of wisdom that I began taking notes. I finally read over these notes the other day and wanted to share them. His words, I find, are so relevant for todays young artist and I encourage you to question his words and compare them to your work. Here's the first chapter. I'll post up more throughout the month. Cheers.

Here's Chapter 1: Seeing with the Painter's Eye

The artist first step towards ultimate beauty, unity, organization of painting is learning to see everything in pictorial form.

Paint what you see as you see it. Do not rely on Technique.

In the first case we are really looking primarily at outline and see everything else as secondary; in the second case, mass and tone become of primary importance to us and edges and outlines more incidental.

Show what the edges are doing, and ask how the relationship of other tones unify.

The more he can see the total effect before he starts, the better the painting will be.

He does not single out one thing at a time, for all these things are closely connected and belong to or effect one another.

First, see the picture as a whole with as much identification as possible to pattern design.

Learning to see your subjects in terms of simple masses and relationships to one another in value and in color is the first law of good painting.

Squint your eyes to minus the inconvenient detail.

Label your values and break them apart to 8 gradations.

Though we do and must draw as we paint, let us think of drawing as associated with outline, and paining as associated with mass values and color. This difference in drawing and painting must be understood.

Perspective: The science of drawing forms and as it appears to the eye, as opposed to mechanical projection drawing which renders form on a flat plane or planes in actual dimensions.

Start painting in areas and masses of tones and color than in these masses develop form.

Where edges merge or are very close in value, keep them lost or soft. Where they stand out in contrast, make them so.

Establish the actual area of the landscape to incorporated into your canvas you can paint all materials the size as you see it.

tricky approaches can be easily plagiarized, whereas pictures based on sound knowledge and the individuality of the artist are hard to imitate.

The eye must be trained to organize what it sees in terms of a compositions.

If we can grasp the cause, it helps us greatly understand the effect. Ask questions and learn the effect. This will give your pics more convincing and character.

It takes very little to make a great picture, nature will always provide too much.

Light Fact:

The sky is ordinarily the lightest pattern or mass.
The next lightest mass is usually the ground.
The third would be trees mountains and shadows.

The painter must look at the subject as a unit

Definition of RESURGAM: I shall rise again

I shall begin this first post with an air of intellectual intensity for the sake of my amusement. So I must ask my audience to forgive me as I selfishly embark on this attempt to exclaim who I am. Don’t fret. This shall be one of the few entries littered with words, paragraphs and incomplete sentences in which will emphasize the fact that I’m not a linguist but an artist who should stick to his craft.
One of the few labels that have latched itself onto my identity like a mussel to a rock is “The Artist”. This entitlement was granted to me before I granted it to myself. But as time wore on, I realized deep down an artist was slowly emerging. For past time as a child, I created worlds, stories, and characters on paper that live in my imagination too this day and more so did I ever want to bring these elements to life on the big screen. This passion gave me the notion to become a conceptual artist for the entertainment industry. After obtaining my associates of arts in Oregon, I gathered all my belongs and traveled to Los Angeles to pursue my passions.
The next three years of art school nearly destroyed all my motivation and passion for my craft. Only this last year have I rediscovered my thirst to create again. Poverty, personal struggle, manual labor, old friends, and traveling have taught me more than any art school would ever teach me in a lifetime. I have rediscovered my inner artist again. And in this, my paint strokes are now free of anxiety and fearless of the critics. To paint as I wish or in a manner that pleases me has finally returned into my work and I owe it to my experiences, friends, and God.
For the first time in my life, I am now focusing on the beauty rather than the evils of this world. I now observe with wonder and not with pessimistic hopelessness that most artists depend on for inspiration. God has given me new eyes to see and I hope that through my work, I can please the viewer and inspire them to see the world with new eyes as well.
I welcome you to my visual dairy and hope you enjoy your stay. Always leave a comment or critique so I can ferociously attack you of your obvious lack of intelligence and self respect. Just kidding.
